A Quick Look Into The World of Tarot Cards

Tarot cards have been used for centuries as a tool for divination, self-reflection, and guidance. The tarot deck consists of 78 cards, each with its unique symbolism and meaning. Learning all the cards might seem like a daunting task, but with a systematic approach, it can be an enjoyable and enlightening journey. In this article, we will explore each tarot card in a way that makes it easy to remember and understand.

The Tarot Deck Structure

Tarot Card Reading

The tarot deck is divided into two main parts: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.

  1. Major Arcana (22 cards)

The Major Arcana cards represent significant life events and spiritual lessons. These cards carry more weight in a reading and often indicate major shifts or turning points in one’s life.

Examples:

  • The Fool (Card 0): Symbolizing new beginnings, adventures, and spontaneity, The Fool encourages you to embrace change and take risks.
  • The Lovers (Card VI): Signifying choices, relationships, and harmony, The Lovers often appear when you are facing decisions that require careful consideration.
  1. Minor Arcana (56 cards)

The Minor Arcana consists of four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each suit corresponds to an element and represents different aspects of daily life.

  • Wands (Fire): Associated with passion, creativity, and inspiration.
    • Ace of Wands: Represents a burst of energy and new opportunities. It signifies the start of a creative or spiritual journey.
    • Ten of Wands: Indicates the burdens and responsibilities that come with success. It urges you to delegate and prioritize to avoid burnout.
  • Cups (Water): Connected to emotions, relationships, and intuition.
    • Page of Cups: Represents new emotional experiences and messages. It encourages you to listen to your heart and trust your instincts.
    • Three of Cups: Signifying celebration and joy, this card suggests coming together with loved ones to share happiness.
  • Swords (Air): Linked to thoughts, intellect, and challenges.
    • Knight of Swords: Symbolizing swift action and determination, this card encourages you to pursue your goals with focus and confidence.
    • Ten of Swords: Represents the end of a challenging situation. It signifies a period of transformation and the opportunity for a fresh start.
  • Pentacles (Earth): Associated with material aspects, career, and practicality.
    • Ace of Pentacles: Indicates a new financial or career opportunity. It encourages you to seize the moment and make practical investments.
    • Nine of Pentacles: Represents financial independence and self-sufficiency. It suggests enjoying the fruits of your labor.

Tips for Memorizing Tarot Card Meanings

  1. Elemental Associations: Connect each suit to its corresponding element (Wands – Fire, Cups – Water, Swords – Air, Pentacles – Earth) to understand the broader themes.
  2. Numerology: Pay attention to the numbers on the cards. Each number has its significance, with Aces signifying beginnings, and higher numbers indicating progression or culmination.
  3. Visual Imagery: Analyze the images on the cards. The symbolism in the artwork often provides clues about the card’s meaning.
  4. Storytelling: Create narratives or stories involving the cards. This helps in remembering the context and associations.

Learning the tarot can be a fascinating and enriching experience. By breaking down the cards into categories, understanding their elemental associations, and delving into their symbolic meanings, you can unlock the secrets of the tarot deck. Remember that practice and intuition play crucial roles in becoming proficient in reading tarot cards. So, grab your deck, embark on this mystical journey, and let the wisdom of the tarot guide you on your path.

Here’s a quick attempt to explain and help memorize most of the typical Tarot Card deck with the help of this short story:

Once upon a time in a small village nestled between rolling hills and ancient forests, there lived a young and carefree individual known as The Fool. With a small knapsack slung over their shoulder, The Fool set out on a journey to explore the world and discover the secrets that lay beyond the horizon.

As The Fool strolled down the winding path, they encountered a Magician, who bestowed upon them the power of infinite potential and the ability to manifest their desires. Inspired, The Fool continued their journey, guided by the bright light of The High Priestess. She whispered secrets of intuition and the mysteries of the subconscious, urging The Fool to trust their inner voice.

On the road, The Fool encountered The Empress, a nurturing figure surrounded by abundance and fertility. It was here that The Fool learned about the beauty of creation and the importance of cultivating their dreams. The journey continued, leading them to The Emperor, a symbol of structure and authority. The Fool realized the need for discipline to turn their dreams into reality.

Moving forward, The Fool encountered The Lovers, representing choices and partnerships. Faced with a crossroads, they made a decision, embracing The Chariot’s determination and willpower to move forward. The Fool’s journey took them through Strength, teaching them the power of patience and compassion.

As The Fool traversed the ups and downs of the path, they faced The Hermit, a wise old soul with a lantern, guiding them to introspection and self-discovery. Emerging from this solitary reflection, The Fool encountered the Wheel of Fortune, a reminder of life’s cycles and the inevitability of change.

The Fool’s journey led them to Justice, where they learned about balance and fairness. They then faced The Hanged Man, surrendering to a new perspective and gaining a deeper understanding of sacrifice for greater enlightenment. Escaping the confines of The Hanged Man’s tree, The Fool encountered Death, symbolizing transformation and rebirth. Here, The Fool embraced change, shedding old habits and embracing new beginnings.

Continuing on, The Fool met Temperance, embodying harmony and balance. They learned to blend opposing forces to find a middle path. The Devil appeared, tempting The Fool with material desires, but they broke free, understanding the importance of self-control.

The Tower struck with sudden change, breaking down old structures and paving the way for a new beginning. The Fool faced the Star, symbolizing hope and inspiration, guiding them toward renewed faith in the journey. The Moon and The Sun revealed the mysteries of the unconscious and the joys of enlightenment.

Reaching the end of the path, The Fool encountered Judgment, a call to self-reflection and accountability. Finally, The World unfolded, symbolizing completion and fulfillment of The Fool’s journey.

With the help of such stories we can get a deeper understanding of the entire tarot deck and discover a profound wisdom within the cards. The cards weave a tapestry of lessons, challenges, and triumphs, revealing the secrets of life’s journey.

Tarot is not just a set of cards but a mirror reflecting the eternity of the consciousness and of soul’s experiences.

Precious gems are very different from semi-precious gems and crystals. They possess some very specific characteristics and clients usually get them certified by laboratories. Blue Sapphire (Neelam) (External Link: https://thescientificastrologer.com/2014/09/15/most-powerful-gemstone-in-vedic-astrology-blue-sapphire-or-neelam-saturn/), for instance, is a very popular precious gem and it is supposed to be accepted only after thorough checkup both for quality and suitability. Below are some Tables (Source with courtesy: http://www.osfa.org.uk) to help subscribers understand the generic/natural compatibility. GEM SERIES: Insights on SOUL-GEM Selection [Part I]

Rule # ONE

Train to tune into the cosmic clockwork. Know that nothing is isolated.

 The clock is precise.

As astrologers, we are only Time Readers.

Assessing through Multiple Systems of Astrology, simultaneously

In over two and a half decades of my experiments with astrology and gems, I have found something very interesting. For most natives or birth charts, it is not a question of finding the most suitable gem. Rather surprisingly, it is just about ruling out the ones that will not get the desired results. Ending up with three gems is rare and one has to be lucky to get to two gems, both suitable. However, in most cases, it is just one gem. THAT ONE GEM, would tune-up the entire internal cosmic mechanism of the native and will potentially do wonders with time.

Here are some simple methods one may experiment with before consulting the expert. Begin with the natal birth chart after performing proper birth time rectification (External Link: https://www.astrogle.com/astrology/birth-time-rectification-through-k-p-astrology.html), preferably using the Ruling Planets of KP (Krishnamurthy Paddhyati) System. Take the Natal Chart, find out the Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion out of the 27 Mansions) and its Charan (the assigned Phase out of four phases) and write down both the Lords of the Nakshatra and the Charan. The Charan of Nakshatra denotes the area of sky where Moon was positioned (degrees and minutes in a zodiac sign) at the time of birth of the native. Then, note the House Lords of the Ascendant (Tanu-Bhava, house of self and beginning), the Fifth (Vidya-Sthana, house of creativity and intelligence) and the Ninth (Dharma-Sthana, house of father, religion and good fortune) house. In traditional astrology, these three houses are the most important ones for finding out suitable gemstones for a birth chart, at a basic level. Note that all these houses are Fifth from one another, which essentially means intertwined, accumulated good fortune of past incarnations (look up Vedic astrology fifth house: External Link: http://www.barbarapijan.com/bpa/Bhava/5putra_bhava.htm).  The Ascendant and Nakshatra – Phase may vary with slight changes in time so before recording the astrologer should crosscheck these. Some techniques include using the characteristics of Nakshatra to ascertain whether the personality traits of the native match and using the Ascendant sign to match and verify with the Ayurvedic Prakriti (Physical constitution / natural imbalance or disorders).

After recording all five planets of lordships as instructed above, find out which ones of these have absolutely no connection with the Dussthanas (negative houses) Sixth, Eighth and Twelfth houses. The connection could be with the rulers of these houses, the Dispositors (the planets which are the rulers of the sign or house that is occupied by any another sign or house lord), or if any of these five lords are placed in Dussthanas. Note, that to ascertain the placements of planets in houses one must refer to Bhava Chalit chart (Cuspal chart as per KP System). The planet that has no connection with Dussthanas (6th, 8th and 12th houses) is the shortlisted one that is subsequently worth a trial on another system.

GEM SERIES: Insights on SOUL-GEM Selection [Part II]

Rule # TWO

Do not undermine the basics.

It is all in the ‘energy’.

Precision precedes potency

The nine precious gems are Ruby (Manik) for Sun, Pearl (Moti) for Moon (Chandra), Red Coral (Moonga) for Mars (Mangal), Emerald (Panna) for Mercury (Buddha), Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) for Jupiter (Guru), Diamond (Heera) or White Sapphire (Safed Pukhraj) for Venus (Shukra), Blue Sapphire (Neelam) for Saturn (Shani), Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) for North Node of Moon (Rahu), and Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia) for South Node of Moon (Ketu). An understanding of basic elements and representations of all planets is necessary for gem analysis, such as Fire, Earth, Air, and Water, Benefic vs. Malefic, and Exaltation and Debilitation of planets with respect to sign placements. Whether a native can wear two gems simultaneously would depend upon the natural and functional (chart-specific) friendship or animosity (External Link: http://www.astrologykrs.com/functionalmaleficandbenefic.html) among the respective planets that such gems represent.

Figure 1 Source: http://gemstoneartist.com/gemstone-articles/how-gems-are-cut/

Similarly, planets determine which gem should occupy which finger and the placement and strength of a gem in the birth chart determines whether the native must wear it in left hand or the right one. There are various approaches in this regard such as the reverse pairing of solar vs. lunar limb and gems of respective natures. Another popular technique is to wear the potentially malefic gem as per the birth chart, or in its testing phase, in the left hand only. Mastery of these techniques comes with long-term real-life experience and with the deployment of (Karma) Desh (culture and location), Kaala (time and age), Patra (the native himself and his personal attributes) rule. The rule states that for each astrological interpretation and gem analysis, the astrologer must consider these three traits and based on these, they must decide which principles to apply and which to rule out. This is where the elements, energy and reverse engineering come into play and it renders astrological interpretations their constituent of ‘art’.

Figure 2 Source: http://wassermanjewelgalleries.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/January-repair02-770×350.jpg

Suppose the native has their third Saturn Return in effect. One would be wise to exercise common knowledge with interpretation and before any recommendations because most definitely the native is elderly, the results would differ from first Saturn Return. Likewise, an experienced astrologer must crosscheck and refrain from recommending strong or potentially malefic gemstones to natives that exhibit sure signs of aggression. I have seen veteran astrologers reverse engineer and reconcile calculations based on observations of Desh, Kaala and Patra. Remember; better a weaker dose than the wrong one. Unless multiple systems have confirmed the accuracy, begin with testing the weaker gems even if the clients insist on potency. It is a very common practice in India to keep Blue Sapphire (External Link: https://www.speakingtree.in/allslides/how-to-check-if-blue-sapphire-suits-you/what-to-expect-if-the-blue-sapphire-does-not-suit-you) under pillow for 3 nights or to tie it on arm in thick cloth for 3 days before actually putting it on. This is to ‘test’ with the quality of dreams or the incidents that follow during this testing period, and make sure the gem suits the bearer. Blue Sapphire is a gem with the properties of Saturn; a tremendously powerful gem that can yield very strong results.

With precious gem recommendations, potency follows precision.

Being Gem Aware (Introduction)

Method to the madness

Although selection must and testing must be left to the experts and laboratories, it is good to be aware of different types of gems, their characteristics, background and how they are graded, evaluated and so on. NJ’s series of articles will deal with further insights on soul-gem selection in detail but here is a brief introduction for those that are new on the blog.

The first step is to shortlist one’s favorable gem through proper calculations based on the principles of Jyotisha Shastra (science of energy and opportune time). This is a rigorous process involving numerous paddhyatis or systems. Typically, over a dozen different aspects of Jyotisha need to be referred to in order to get an idea of ideal gem that the planetary placements consent to. Once the gem has been shortlisted, the suitability of gem must be verified using a low potency gem of

that kind. Even though it is a sample, technically, this should not be a substitute or artificial stone. For testing too, the gem has to be natural. Slightly heated or treated gems are acceptable only for verification purposes but not for permanent or long-term use.

It is a common practice in India, for instance, to test Blue Sapphire by putting in under the pillow or by tying it in thick cloth on arm for first three days and observing the dreams an

d how one generally feels. This testing period can be extended to 21 days based approval from the analysis. In this duration, one generally notices significant events and a better state of consciousness. Native must discuss with an experienced astrologer after 21 days before upgrading to higher potency or grade.

Once the compatibility has been confirmed, then comes determining the opportune time of ‘accepting’ or putting it on. One method is to do this on day & time of occurrence of one’s birth Nakshatra (the lunar mansion in which native’s moon was placed at the time of birth). This could mean waiting for up to 27 days before the time is opportune. Everything has a scientific logic behind it, including which metal ring goes with a particular gem, the correct arm and finger assigned to all gems and so on.

Four C’s of Gems

The most important and often overlooked C of a gem is its Cask-life. In case of gems, the age (before cutting and polishing) adds to their potency. As long as it is a natural gem, the four C’s follow its age, in the following sequence:

Clarity

As a thumb rule, gems with very few or no inclusions are the most expensive ones. The clearer the gem, the more valuable. Yet, only laboratory-based tests can set the ones with no inclusions apart from glass or artificially created dummies. Even the most experienced gemologists sometimes find it impossible to guarantee a true gem without using scientific apparatus. There are several parameters such as refractive index, specific gravity, hardness, density, composition and so on.

Color

The more steadily spread and intense the color, more the desirability. Tone, saturation and hue of precious gems determine their value to a great extent. The tone can be deep, dark or rich; the saturation would show its purity, intensity and brightness and the hue refers to the type of shade it carries.

Carats

Assuming that the clarity and color both are passable, the weight of gems preferably in carats, as opposed to astrological measure / scale of Ratti’s, matters a lot. Astrologically, the weight of a gem has to correlate with the age and weight of the native wearing the gem. There is some controversy on whether it is the weight of the person, or the age, that determines the ideal weight of the gem. However, experienced astrologers never take one factor in consideration alone when deciding upon the carats. In addition, density and weight of a gem are more crucial than its size.

Cut

To take the best advantage of a potent gem, the cut has to be fine because it adds to a gem’s value and beauty. The secret is that the cut has to be specific to the native. In transiting lunar mansions, gems are massaged, and a suitable cut enhances the recall and reception of a gem in this process.

GEM SERIES: Insights on SOUL-GEM Selection [Part 0]

Rule # ZERO

All systems of Vedic astrology must agree to prescribe any native the same SOUL GEM.

If this does not happen, the calculation is flawed.

If this does, nothing outshines the magic.

~ NJ: The Jewel Whisperer

Introduction

Purpose of this post series is to provide right direction to beginners in Vedic astrology (Jyotisha Shastra) and aspirants of healing with Precious Gemstones (Nav-ratna, Rashi-ratna, Mani and Gem Therapy). Key to great interpretations and perfect gem selection is to crosscheck the results through hit and trial using multiple systems of ancient Indian astrology. When practiced perseveringly with pre-rectified data such as Ayanamsa (Precision of Equinox), time of birth and so on, the results are surprisingly accurate. With correct approach, one can tap into the power of gems and use it for one’s overall well-being. In this series, we will take into account various systems of astrology, as and when applicable, to better understand how to determine the most suitable gem for any given birth chart.

Figure 1 Source: Images5.aplus.com

In general, gems are mineral crystals found in raw form (known as Rough) at great depths and formed in long time under extreme temperature and pressure. Some gems can be organic though, such as pearls and corals found underwater. Formed exquisitely under such complex and rare circumstances, they also possess unique characteristics such as composition, clarity, hardness, refractive index and specific gravity. Gems can be tested and identified for their authenticity based on physical, chemical and optical properties in laboratories all around the world. Some gems take over 150 million years to form, and across civilizations and cultures, humans have struggled for thousands of years to find such valuable deposits of gems. The prices attached to gemstones are not just for the material itself, but also for the immense amount of hard work that goes into locating it and bringing it to its finished form. In terms of functionality, there can be no comparison between the nine precious gems and any other semi-precious stones.

According to Nakshatra Jyotisa, everything in the universe is a being, on an endless journey of its own. Everything is perfect and has a reason for being the way it is. If it were not, if would not have survived and existed. Just as Moon’s South Node shows where a native is coming from, the North Node reflects where he or she is destined to be. Everything is balancing itself through its own karmic account. If so, then why gems as a remedy and a remedy to what?  Life follows its karmic course and those who practice astrology can clearly see that during interpretations. If that is the case, the only thing one must do to be in harmony, is to take all measures to dilute the illusion of ‘I’. ‘I’ did such, and so such is the result; this is an illusion.

Figure 2 Source: static4.businessinsider.com

What gems do is that they intensify the karmic effects and pacify the illusion of self, and hence, they magnify harmony with nature. In order to categorize and locate patterns, in Jyotisha Shastra, everything has a representation according to its basic element. Planets too have elements assigned to them, like everything else. Moreover, they are the most solid benchmarks to relate to ‘time’. Similarly, within practical reach of us humans gems are the most intense substances due to their almost timeless life cycle and properties. It will not be an exaggeration to say that the nine precious (natural) gemstones are, in a way, tiny clones or remains of the seven physical planets and energy repeaters of the two virtual planets. When harnessed properly, their energies can very well alter our state of mind and state of being.

Jyotisha Shastra: A Scientific Subject

Astrology, (henceforth referred to as Nakshatra Jyotisa, Jyotisha or Vedic Jyotisha Shastra, meaning the study of light and time), is absolute science while astrological interpretation is art. The first rule of understanding Jyotisha thoroughly: the learner must experience it, apply it and experiment with it. Jyotisha is about acknowledging and understanding the universal automation and recognizing that everything is on its definite path. The purpose of Jyotisha is not to predict the future, but to facilitate it, by providing a deeper understanding of ‘the real show’ that goes on backstage.

This article aims at providing the reader with at least one simple tool to feel the precision of Nakshatra Jyotisa system of Vedic astrology based on 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions; 4 phases of each = total 108 unique zones). Most people that discard astrology do not have the appropriate apparatuses to experiment with or they have little experience learning it systematically, under supervision. Hence, they typically end up confusing a wrong set of interpretations with the system itself. Here are a few basic questions to begin with. First, would it not be logical to assume that everything has a correlation of some kind, known or unknown, to what that thing surrounds and is surrounded with? If yes, then likelihood of understanding such correlation with time, practice and experimentation should only be scientific. Second, what other event imaginable might have a higher possibility of occurrence than this one, “the Sun will rise from the east direction in the morning, precisely at the time that could very well be calculated and predicted for any given day in the future”. Third, in both scale and rationale, the interaction of human brain with cosmic nervous system is no different from the neurons inside the brain interacting with each other, across synaptic cleft. The point is that planets serve as concrete benchmarks for in-depth study of time and variation. Jyotisha Shastra, hence, is not groundless but only scientific.

To have a bird’s eye view of Vedic Jyotisha Shastra, one may imagine an endlessly large clockwork with complex and sophisticated wind-up mechanism and a perfect series of pulleys, cogwheels, and coils and gears. In this clockwork, every pulley has its unique function, all cogwheels are interconnected and every gear is indispensable. To appreciate this model wholly one must assign all things imaginable to these gears, preferably in the order of their physical or metaphysical mass, significance or size. Such cosmic clockwork would include every being and thing, both living and so-called non-living; and all forces, feelings, phenomena and events, so on and so forth. Although the configuration of such a setup would be highly dynamic but it would totally be possible to correlate the movement of bigger gears with the smaller ones and vice-versa, as well as the events associated with them. Nakshatra Jyotisa is the sophisticated science of analyzing the universe with such a perspective. The gears are virtual, yet mechanical, and their movement is scientific; but a large part of what they represent is abstract and hence interpretation is a skill that requires practice and experience to master.

Two key characteristics that set Nakshatra Jyotisa apart from the western astrological systems are; first, the precision and rectification of equinoxes (Ayanamsa), and second, a high number of divisions, sub-division, cycles and sub-cycles. Critics often attack astrology with the claim that it relies on the archaic locations of heavenly bodies that are different today from what they used to be 2000 years ago. Though they are true about the western astrology over this fact, it does not apply to Nakshatra Jyotisa. Calculations of Nakshatra Jyotisa and Vedic Jyotisha Shastra take in consideration this rectification part with an astonishing precision. A simple test any nonprofessional could perform today is by locating the true, real-time position of a constellation or a planet using Mobile Apps like Sky Map. When validated with the positions mentioned in Vedic Planetary Ephemeris for that particular date and time, these positions match precisely to the degree, minutes and seconds. The intricacy of astrological calculations in Vedic Jyotisha Shastra is far more exquisite compared to all other similar systems. For example, Nakshatra Jyotisa uses 27 Nakshatras or lunar mansions, each consisting of four phases, totaling 108 zones as compared to 12 zodiac signs of western astrology. While evaluating timing of events, there are numerous sub-divisions within divisions and sub-sub-divisions within sub-divisions of Dashas (planetary periods or categorized time fragments). In western astrology, there is no corresponding or even functionally comparable system. Similarly, western astrology uses only one birth chart while Vedic Jyotisha Shastra employs 60 Divisional Charts and numerous other aspects and sub-systems. Essentially, the idea is to divide 360 degrees of sky among all 27 lunar mansions, which have four phases (pada) each. A single phase consists of three degrees and twenty minutes (3°20′); degrees, minutes and seconds are the units used to measure planetary movements.

With this approach, an individual zodiac sign now has nine unique shades, to begin with, that will provide incredible information when used with rectified true sidereal ecliptic coordinates (real size and location of the constellations in the sky, same as the one used by astronomers worldwide today). Softwares such as Jagannath Hora (download free from http://www.vedicastrologer.org/jh/) can provide several relevant insights.

To get first-hand experience, here is the method to easily calculate the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) of a native (meaning the person in question whose birth chart is being cast), and some resources through which to find out the meaning behind that Nakshatra. Natives can ascertain their respective Nakshatras and the corresponding Phase (a number between 1 and 4) by entering their exact date, time and place of birth on Prokerela Nakshatra Finder: http://www.prokerala.com/astrology/nakshatra-finder/. Suppose, the Nakshatra that shows up is Uttra Bhadrapada (Pada 4 or Phase 4), natives can then find further information (as follows) regarding this Nakshatra by querying www.BarbaraPijan.com with the name and phase of their Nakshatra. They can also get the relevant keywords by visiting the table of Nakshatra attributes on the following link: http://www.barbarapijan.com/bpa/Nakshatra_radical/nakshatra_attributes_table.htm.

Uttra Bhadrapada (Phase 4): Reigning between three degrees and 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes in Pisces zodiac (Jupiter’s domain), Uttra Bhadrapada is the 26th Nakshatra that is ruled by Saturn. It represents dualistic imagery because Jupiter is all about expansion, superiority, excellence, wisdom, knowledge while Saturn denotes boundaries, depth, restriction and spiritual discipline. Uttra Bhadrapada natives may be tempted to gossip but they always answer to the point without beating around the bush. Their conscience is firm and cannot easily be swayed. Divine, healing sciences fascinate them and they are endowed with poetic, literary skills, love of family, happiness from children, good spouse, several travels, special resources, gift of gab, good heart, deep insights, and righteous, generous and joyous nature. The fourth phase of this Nakshatra falls under the purview of Mars ruled Scorpio sub-division. The Martian energy provides the native a mysterious power to go to extremes of concealed knowledge and fetch the pearls of untapped wisdom, especially pertaining to healing.

Jyotisha is one of the oldest subjects of study in the history of humanity. It deals with both the singularity and duality. Art provides meaning to science. Science provides survival to art. By answering ‘how’, science empowers humanity as by answering ‘why’, spirituality makes man wise. Jyotisha Shastra has elements of both art and science. It would be non-scientific to reject the sophisticated and rational study of association between some of the biggest moving objects in the universe with all that surrounds them and vice-versa. From author’s extensive experience in various branches of ancient predictive systems including Nakshatra Jyotisa, when all rules are applied properly and the raw data is accurate the direction shown by Jyotisha Shastra can be bewildering. Critics must take time to first study the subject under supervision and experiment with it before deriving conclusions.

Icelandic Music for Soul

Hey! Hey! Hey!

I don’t like walking around this old and empty house

So hold my hand, I’ll walk with you my dear

The stairs creak as I sleep,

It’s keeping me awake

It’s the house telling you to close your eyes

And some days I can’t even trust myself

It’s killing me to see you this way

‘Cause though the truth may vary

This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey! Hey! Hey!

There’s an old voice in my head

That’s holding me back

Well tell her that I miss our little talks

Soon it will all be over, and buried with our past

We used to play outside when we were young

And full of life and full of love

Some days I don’t know if I am wrong or right.

Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear

‘Cause though the truth may vary

This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey!

Don’t listen to a word I say

Hey!

The screams all sound the same

Hey!

Though the truth may vary

This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

You’re gone, gone, gone away,

I watched you disappear

All that’s left is a ghost of you

Now we’re torn, torn, torn apart,

there’s nothing we can do,

Just let me go, we’ll meet again soon

Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around

I’ll see you when I fall asleep

Hey!

Don’t listen to a word I say

Hey!

The screams all sound the same

Hey! Though the truth may vary

this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Hey!

Don’t listen to a word I say

Hey!

The screams all sound the same

Hey!

Though the truth may vary

This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary

This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore

GEMSTONES: Their Science and Use in Vedic Astrology

connections

by Bipul Pathak

1. INTRODUCTION

Throughout the ages, the gemstones have been seen as representations of wealth and power. Symbols of supremacy like crowns and richly decorated clothes and robes have traditionally been adorned with jewels. But gemstones are not just for the wealthy or scientifically minded researcher. But these can be appreciated by common man also just to enjoy the beauty of these gems. The gemstones appeal initially due to their mysterious appeal, lustre and their colour. This makes them exquisite but their rarity, hardness and durability makes them doubly valuable.

Gemstones are minerals. Out of a total of more than 2500 different minerals, only about 60 odd are commonly used as gemstones. Other minerals are unsuitable as gems because they are too soft and get scratched easily.

2. WHAT ARE GEMSTONES

A mineral (or occasionally an organic mineral) to be called a gemstone, it must be beautiful in its appearance and colour. A gemstone has to be durable-i.e. it should be hard enough to survive constant use and handling without getting scratched or damaged. Finally, it must be rare, because its scarcity makes it valuable.

Most of the gemstones are natural inorganic minerals with a fixed chemical composition and a regular internal crystal structure. A few gems like Pearl and Amber come from plants and animals and are known as organic gems.

Then there are some gems, which are synthetic. They do not have natural origin but are made in laboratories. They have very similar physical properties as the natural gems, and can be cut and polished to imitate the real thing. Sometimes these are used as a substitute in jewellery as they cost substantially less than the real gems.

3. SCIENCE OF GEMMOLOGY

Gems are scientifically fascinating too. Gemmologists make a complete study of each stone, both as it is found in the rocks and after it has been cut and polished. That is why during the formal study of gemology, both aspects are given due importance. This makes them able to distinguish between two similar looking stones, one of which may be fake. The science of gemology looks at these minerals by way of their crystal structure and the physical properties. Everybody interested in buying gems (for whatever purpose) should have an idea of these properties.

  • Hardness— One of the key qualities of a gemstone is hardness. This means how well a gemstone resists scratching. Higher the hardness, more durable is the stone. Diamond is the hardest gemstone known and has been assigned hardness of 10 on Moh’s scale of hardness. The Talc has been given lowest hardness of 1 on this scale. All gemstones are rated in between 1 to 10.
  • Specific Gravity— This property shows the density of the gem. In common parlance it shows the weightiness of the gem. The greater the specific gravity, the heavier the gem will feel.
  • Crystal shapes— This can give a definite clue about the gem’s internal structure and is used by experts to differentiate between fakes and original gems.
  • Optical Properties— These properties are also used by researchers and experts to differentiate and decide about the ways of cutting and polishing the gems.

4. HOW GEMSTONES ARE FORMED

MINERAL GEMSTONES

Gemstones that are of mineral origin are found in rocks, or in gem gravels derived from these rocks. Rocks themselves are made up of one or more minerals. The formation of these rocks is a continuous and ongoing process. Gem quality minerals within these rocks may be easily accessible at the earth’s surface or they can lie buried deep inside it. Sometimes these gem laden rock gravels get separated from their host rock due to erosion and are carried long distances by rivers to lakes, sea and shallow areas. The three types of rocks where gemstones are found are:

  • Igneous rocks

These are rocks, which have solidified from the molten rocks, which lies molten deep beneath the earth’s surface. Some igneous rocks are extrusive where it solidifies after volcanic eruption and some are intrusive rocks where it solidifies beneath the earth. The rate of solidification determines the size of crystals found. Slower the rate, larger the crystal and consequently larger the size of gemstones in it.

  • Sedimentary rocks

These rocks are formed by accumulation of rock fragments produced by weathering. In time these fragments settle down and harden into rock once again. Sedimentry rocks are normally found in layers and sometimes the gems found here show these layers in them.

  • Metamorphic rocks

Metamorphic rocks are either Igneous or Sedimentary, which have changed beneath the earth due to heat and pressure and has resulted in new form of minerals in it. During this process gemstones also grow within them.

ORGANIC GEMSTONES

Organic gemstones have their origin either from plants or from animals. Like natural Pearls form around foreign bodies that have made their way inside the shells of marine or freshwater shellfish. Cultured pearls are produced artificially in large fisheries, many in the shallow waters off the seashores. Shells, which are regarded as gems, may come from animals as diverse as snails and turtles, living in the ocean, in fresh water or on land. Coral is made up of the skeletons of tiny marine animals called Coral Polyps. Bone or Ivory from the teeth or tusks of mammals, may come from recently living animals or from fossils thousands of years old. Amber is fossilized tree resin, collected from soft sediments or the sea. Jet is fossilized wood, found in some sedimentary rocks.

SYNTHETIC GEMSTONES

Synthetic gemstones are made in laboratories or factories, not in rocks. They virtually have the same chemical composition and crystal structure as natural gemstones and consequently their optical and physical properties are very similar. However, they can usually be identified by the difference in the inclusions in them. Many types of gems have been synthesized but only a few are produced commercially, generally for scientific or industrial use.

Because of the way the synthetic gems are made, they show subtle differences in shape and colour that help to distinguish them from their natural counterparts. Similarly, the synthetic gems have inclusions, which are different from the natural inclusions. The experts can identify them and distinguish.

ASTROLOGY AND GEMSTONES

  • LEGEND AND MYTHOLOGY

As per the legend associated with the gems, it is said that the king of the demons Bali came to the Indralok-the Heaven. He wanted to win over the Heaven and all the Gods. In Heaven, he was escorted by Indra himself under the guise of a Brahmin seeking to find an animal for propitiation. Indra pleaded with Bali to become animal for the sacrifice as he was not getting anyone. It was getting late and his Yagna would be rendered fruitless. Bali accepted it knowing that his body was invincible. This was known to Indra as well and he did not hurt the body of demon king but hit his head with Vajra. The demon king was shattered in to pieces of gems simply because he was a unique creature himself.

It is said in mythology that from the bones of demon king Bali, Diamonds were found; from his teeth the Pearls; from his blood drops Ruby; from the gall bladder Emerald; from his eyes came out Blue Sapphires; from the juice of his heart came Lapis Lazuli; from his bone marrow appeared Karketan; from his nails appeared Cat’s eye; from his body fat came Rock crystal; from flesh came Coral; from skin came out Yellow Sapphire; from his semen appeared gem called Bheesham.

The legend further goes that from these gems, Sun took away Ruby, Moon picked up Pearls, Mars took away Coral, Mercury took Emeralds, Jupiter picked up Yellow Sapphire, Venus took Diamonds, Saturn took Blue Sapphires,Rahu took away Zircon and Ketu lifted Lapis Lazuli. This is the reason why these stones are worn by humans to enhance the strength of these planets.

According to mythology, all these gems had been grown by nature inside the body of demon King Bali as he was a unique creature and when these gems came out of the shattered body, it was symbol of victory of Gods over the demons.

However far-fetched this myth may sound. But one thing is sure that even in ancient times when there was no gemology or research available, people were aware of wearing gems for strengthening various planets and for propitiation purposes. In all probability, these legends started to grow as people felt the beneficial results after wearing them and in present day we hear a full myth around gemstones.

  • HISTORY AND GEMSTONES

Ancient Roman writer Pliny (62-113 AD) had written that there was a very large market for jewels and precious stones on the Secundra port in Egypt. Merchants ,traders from Rome,Athens and other parts of the world used to come with their merchandise here. Jewels and precious stones with all their powers were mentioned even before these centers came into existence in Holy Bible and even before that in Vishnu Puran.

Who has not read about the great hall in which beautiful empress Cleopatra had received the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, which was decorated with furniture studded with rare gems and Jewels. In recent history, the Peacock throne of the Moghuls was studded with jewels of all kind and had attracted many invaders . Nadir Shah came and invaded India in 1739 and took away this throne ,Takht-I-tawoos ,with him. The monuments built by Moghuls show the splendour of their times and gems were very integral to it. Taj Mahal is living example of the use of precious stones in buildings. Jade, cornelion and other gems were used by the Moghuls in plenty.

The Greek writer Thiophratus who lived in 287 BC had written a book on Diamonds and gems. After him Pliny (62-113 AD) wrote in his book on Natural History about gems in detail. In 13th century Marcopolo visited India, China, Burma and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) ,and he wrote about the treasures and jewels in these countries in detail.

  • BELIEFS AND GEMSTONES

Mythology and legends are not convincing to modern generation but some of the communities and cultures still have their beliefs about the usage and effects of various gemstones. About the Amber ,it is said that the jewels have been made of the teardrops of a Greek God. According to popular belief in the west, the Amber cures one of rheumatism. In Germany, the garland of Ambers is hung around the neck of the infant, so that their teething takes place without trouble. In Turkey ,people believe that by fixing Amber in the Hubble –bubble, the germs would not spread and will be killed even after many have puffed it.

In Greece, people think if wine is poured into the cups made of Amethyst, one does not get drunk after drinking that wine. In Rome, a talisman having Coral pieces is considered very auspicious to quell the bad effects of evil spirits. And Romans used to hang chains made from Coral to the cradle of infants to ward off evil spirits. In ancient China, rings studded with Conch or Oyster shells were believed to cure all aches and ailments of stomach.

In India also, lockets made of silver and studded with Pearls are hung around the necks of the infants to ward off evils. The Greeks still believe, if women wear the Blue Sapphires on person ,no sense of immorality would pollute their mind nor any fear of supernatural will affect them.

There are numerous such beliefs cutting across all cultures and communities, which are associated with the gems. These if written would fill volumes .But a fair idea can be had from the above that the gems had a very special place in human life since ancient times.

4. SCIENCE BEHIND EFFECTS OF GEMSTONES.

That gemstones work for the betterment of one’s life is a known fact. But many people do not believe in their effects. These days people, especially the younger generation, looks for scientific links between the gems, and their effects. All astrological reasoning fails to impress many people to accept the benefits of the gemstones.

There are laws in pure science which have not been proved but are accepted as their effects are observed by us day in and day out and they are called laws conversely also as they have not been proved otherwise. The simplest example being Law of Gravitation. It is a law because it is observed daily by us and also it has not been proved through experiment to be not true.

Similarly the effects of the gemstones are observed by those who use them under proper prescription. Since the effects are very individual in nature, they are not in the scrutiny of public and people do not believe in their beneficial values.

The gemstones have different colours and lustre. Sun being the source of all energy, also affects human beings. If we observe the sunlight through prism in a laboratory, we get seven-colour spectrum. The other invisible two colours are infra red and ultra violet. Thus the spectrum of nine colours is understood to be the cosmic matrix and is very essence of nine planets. The nine planets are associated with these colours and the stones prescribed are also in consonance. It is important to note that the wavelength of coloured light emanating from the nine planets is believed to match those radiating from each planet’s corresponding gemstone. Thus prescribing gemstones is not out of synchronous with this energy system. A particular stone absorbs all kind of solar and cosmic energy and allows a particular type of energy to pass through it and which is then absorbed by the body. If prescribed properly, this actually helps the individual. This restores the balance in him ,and he finds the self-improving.

Moreover, the effects of gemstones have been proved conversely also. If a person is prescribed a wrong gemstone, it has been observed to adversely affect him as long as he wears it and the effect goes away once the stone is removed. Thus the efficacy of gemstones do not require laboratory experiments just the way some of the pure science laws do not require experiment in their support.

  • GEMSTONES AND THEIR SEMI PRECIOUS SUBSTITUTES

The stones which have been described for various planets are the precious stones and are very costly. Another difficulty is that sometimes a stone prescribed is not available. A common man is not able to afford these gemstones. In such cases, a semi precious stone can be worn on prescription which are normally reasonably priced and are readily available also. Although the cosmic results of these stones are subdued in nature but for most cases they work well and in only very few cases the astrologer would insist on precious stone. The astrologers prescribe nine gemstones for nine planets. We hereby give you the details about each stone and the semi precious substitute for it also. The chemical composition of the stone and its occurrence and connected details are also given.

  • RUBY

Ruby is the name given to red gem quality corundum. These can be of varying shades of reds to pink. The best rubies are those, which have mystical deep red colour. • PRESCRIBING THE GEMSTONES

Astrologers all over are prescribing gems for various purposes. There are basically four methods of prescribing the gemstones. We will give the description of all the systems here.

  • Prescription on the basis of ‘Janma Rashi’ or the ‘Moon sign’

In this system of prescription the gemstone is prescribed on the basis of the zodiacal sign in which Moon was posited at the time of birth. This system can lead to prescription of appropriate stone many times but wearers who have worn stones prescribed this way, have many times received adverse results. The basic flaw in the system is that it does not take care of the position of other planets in the zodiacal ecliptic and also loses sight of many other astrological factors. The table below gives the results of the first method . The Indian names for the planets and the stones have also been given for convenience of the readers.

  • Prescription on the basis of ‘Lagna’ –the ‘Birth Ascendant

In this system, the gemstone is prescribed on the basis of the sign which is rising at the time of the birth. The system has a flaw that it does not give credence to any other astrological factor. The stones prescribed this way may not give any effect at times and may adversely affect the native. The chart shown below gives a summary of this system of prescription.

  • Prescription on the basis of ‘Janma Nakshatra’-the ‘Birth Constellation’

In this system the prescription is based on the constellation (Nakshatra) rising at the time of birth. This system in practice has been used for prescribing gemstones with amazing accuracy. But at times it does not give desired results as this system also ignores other astrological factors during the process of prescription of stones to a native. • Prescription by a qualified Astrologer—RECOMMENDED

The most specific method is based on the prescription by a qualified Astrologer. The system takes into account various astrological factors before prescribing the gemstone. This is recommended system as it leaves almost nothing to chance and tries to factor in all aspects before prescription. The steps involved in this system are discussed below, but it should be kept in mind that a qualified Astrologer is a prerequisite to make use of this system.

Step 1.- The Lagna is looked at first and then the lord of ascendant is checked for its auspiciousness in the Rasi and Navamsa chart.

Step 2.– Then the position of the planet ruling the Mahadasha (Major Planetary Period) is checked. Sometimes the ruling planet of antardasha is also factored in.

Step3. – Then the Moon rasi is checked and the lord of Moon sign is checked for auspiciousness .

Step 4. — Then the Janma Nakshatra is checked including the lord and its dispositor for auspiciousness.

Step5. — Next all the nine planets are examined in rasi chart to see their strengths.

Step 6. — Then the sign ownership of various planets is also given due consideration.

Step 7. — The Navamsa chart has to be studied for all the factors simultaneously as it will pinpoint many hidden facts which are overlooked by looking at the Rasi Chart.

Step 8. — Then the chalit chart should also be made to see if a planet changes its position housewise. If it does, then it should be invariably taken into account.

The above system when used by qualified astrologer will give clear indications about the type of gemstone to be prescribed for a native. Normally the stones are prescribed for strengthening the planets which results in beneficial effects. The natives who remain in touch with their astrologers as a counselor, derive more benefits. In such cases, the astrologer is able to prescribe gemstones for a particular period only to derive the maximum benefits of it. Then that gemstone is not used and another gemstone is prescribed for further period. This dynamic way of prescription is actually very beneficial and is gaining ground in modern times.Logically, some of the gemstones interfere with the cosmic effects of other gems also and thus are in conflict. Under such circumstances, this dynamic prescription of gemstones is very useful as the astrologer can derive benefits for the native from various gemstones at different points of time, without any negative effect of the conflict of gems.

  • Prescription on the basis of First letter of the Name

In this system the gemstones are prescribed on the basis of the first letter of the name of the person as per Indian sound of pronunciation of that letter. The system gives very indifferent results and is not very popular. The reason is that, in modern times the names are not given on the basis of the astrological consultations by people and the prescription of a gemstone may not be in tune with the actual horoscope of the native. The table below gives the bird’s eye view of details of the system.

  • CONFLICTING GEMSTONES

In modern times it is very important to look for the conflict between various varieties of gemstones. This is more important as these days jewellery has become a highly consumerist business and most of the times the jewelers are not aware of the occult and cosmic power of the gems. This type of jewellery is basically sold for cosmetic and vanity purposes without giving it a thought that they have a cosmic role to play in the lives of humans.

Thus it is very important even for a layman to have an idea about the conflict of various gemstones so that he himself can take precaution when it is not possible to consult an astrologer. For those astrologers ,who are qualified and prescribe gems, it is equally important area of knowledge. They can prescribe conflicting gemstones at different points of time to derive maximum benefits from all the gemstones for a single native. This dynamic prescription, though monetarily expensive for the native, has been very accurate and effective tool in the hands of a qualified astrologer.

The table below will give the general conflict existing between various gems and the planetary reasons for this astrologically. The qualified astrologer, however, can take liberty of prescribing combined gemstones also. Sometimes it has been seen that the position of planets in the horoscope also shows that combination of certain gemstones would conflict. Thus, a qualified astrologer’s opinion should always be sought in wearing gemstones.

Rahu~Ketu | Moon’s North and South Nodes

I am sharing this brief but really insightful article from Marriane O’Hagan especially for all those people whose queries we couldn’t answer timely. Not just most of the times, but behind each question and problem of life you have an underlining root cause. Of course it is imbalance or lack of harmony but how do you understand the basic, essential problems easily without spending money on astrologers 🙂 Meditation is one answer and hopefully these few lines may help you figure out the root cause too. If you understand little bit of astrology just go and look at your North and South nodes in your birth-chart:

Traditionally the North Node shows the qualities that you have failed to develop in past lives (future karma) and the South Node shows the qualities that you have over-developed in past lives (past karma). The life task is to balance the North Node (sign and house) with the South Node (sign and house) otherwise you cannot reach your full potential. There is a purpose in every life. We have all lived many times and we will keep returning until we balance our karma. We are all accountable for our actions, and the forces of karma will play their hand until we learn. We all go through hardship and we all experience difficult lessons. We are all learning, growing and evolving to higher realms of understanding. It is only through hardship that we can learn. Life is a privilege not to be abused. You cannot rise above the separation of life until you learn to love and forgive, only then can you free yourself from the wheel of karma.

The sign and position of the Moon’s Nodes can help you to understand why you give so much with so little in return, why you suffer so much with so little understanding, why you love so much with little response.

Nakshatra : Secret of Vedic Astrology

In the Vedic (Hindu) system of Astrology, known in Sanskrit as Jyotish, the 27 constellations and not the 12 star-signs are the key to understanding celestial influences on our planet. These 27 constellations are known as the 27 Nakshatras, which are 300 to 400 light years away from earth. Based on a person’s moon Nakshatra at the time of birth, Jyotish offers a most powerful predictive technique compared to other forms of astrology.

The term “Nakshatra,” when broken down into its constituent parts: “naks” meaning “sky” and “shetra” meaning “region”, translate into “Sky Map.” Another translation is arrived at using a different dissection: “naksha” is “map” and “tara” is “star” and so Nakshatra is “Star Map.” Both meanings clearly show that in the eyes of the ancient Vedic (Indian) seers the 27 Nakshatras (constellations) and not the 12 zodiacal star-signs map the sky.

It was the Moon that ancient people first looked to for calculating time and connecting to the stars. ‘Nakshatras’ is the name given to the constellations or mansions of the Moon, as the Moon resides in each of these constellations for one day.

The system of constellations is very ancient, dating back more than 5,000 years as they were referred to in the oldest Veda (Hindu’s scripture). These lunar mansions appear in Chinese and Arabic astrology but have not received much attention in Western or European astrology. Each of the 27 Nakshatras consists of 13º and 20 minutes of the zodiac. Multiplying this length by 27 equals the entire zodiacal belt of 360 degrees.

The Nakshatras are classified in various ways, according to basic attribute, primary motivation (Kama – sensual desires; Artha – material desires; Dharma – living life based on spiritual principles; Moksha – liberation from birth and death), sex, caste, species and so on. They are particularly revealed by their presiding deities, ruling planets and their symbolic form.

The Nakshatra and the signs of the zodiac both begin from the same point. The beginning of the first Nakshatra, or constellation of Ashwini, the first Nakshatra, is the same as that of the first sign of Aries. Each sign contains the combined influence of the Nakshatras falling with it. Compared to the signs, the Nakshatra or Nakshatras possess a deeper effect. The signs are merely “a heap, mass, or collection” of influences as their Sanskrit name suggests.

The planets are the cosmic creative powers. Each planet radiates certain specialized forces. The planets make their impact on the zodiacal field. This specialized circle divided by the signs and Nakshatras is the negative or passive field of influences, while the planets are the positive or active fields. The signs and Nakshatras create the necessary environment, while the planets are the precipitating forces.

Prakriti (the female creative impulse) is the force that sustains the general background of the zodiac. Prakriti produces the basic conditions on which the seeds sprinkled by Purusha (the male consciousness factor) fructify and grow. The Nakshatras and signs of the zodiac are the passive creative potency whereas the planets are the creative or generating forces. The planets are active causes whereas the signs and Nakshatras are the material layer of the action. The Nakshatras and signs constitute the horizontal arm, while the planets represent the vertical arm in the cross of cosmic creation.

In Vedic astrology, the personality traits are read more through the birth star (Nakshatra of the Moon) than by the Sun sign. Nakshatra positions of planets are examined in the birth chart as well. The use of Nakshatra is very important in Vedic astrology, much more than with zodiac signs.

Indian seers say that the Nakshatras represent the abodes into which the fruits of our labor (our Karma) is transferred and stored. The Nakshatras dispense the fruits of Karma, the highest of which is the fruit of our worship and meditation, our spiritual labor of life.

Vedic astrology uses a system of planetary periods called Dasha (Major Period) of various planets based on the Moon Nakshatra at the time of birth. Most important is Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year-long cycle of planetary positions based upon the birth Nakshatra, stars. The planetary periods of Vedic astrology provide an easy and comprehensive system for judging the effects of planets throughout out our lives. The planetary periods are the most accurate system of how the planets distribute their effects through time and different stages of our lives. The major seven planets plus two lunar nodes are assigned periods ranging from 6 to 20 years.

With the help of this Dasha (Major Period system) a Vedic astrologer can predict future events very accurately. However, Western and other astrological systems do not have predictive capabilities as Vedic astrology.

 MATCH MAKING NAKSHATRA CHART

Nakshatra-Match-ScoreThe given table as image can be used to match horoscopes for marriages. You can click on the image to get a larger view.

This table is as given in Dr. B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha book. You can refer to the book for furthe details.

This table uses the Girl’s and Boy’s Birth Nakshatra (Also called the Janma Nakshatra or Moon’s Nakshatra).

Girl’s Rashi (Sign) and Nakshatra is taken as reference.  First find the Rashi and Nakshatra of the Girl and Boy. Then refer to 1st column in Table which is girl’s Rashi and Nakshatra (Each Rashi has 3 Nakshatra [2.25 exactly]) then see the corresponding column for Boy’s Rashi and Nakshatra. If the score is above 18 then further matching can be done with other details in the horoscope. This table can be used to filter at high level.

After charts pass the above criteria you use detailed matching from an able KP Astrologer.

Article: “Marriage Matching – Horoscopes Matching for Marriage”

“Marriage Compatibility is a complex matter.  Indian Astrology has prescribed several parameters to ensure whether the horoscopes of the Girl and the Boy are matching with each other.

The number of compatibility factors are generally called as 10, called Dasama Poruthams.

In addition to ensuring the compatibility factors in any two horoscopes of a Girl and a Boy, there are other factors in either or both the horoscopes that really influence any conclusion like Kalasthra Doshams, Sevvai Dosham (this is also part of the Kalasthra Dosham), Dasa Santhi and the general formation of the horoscopes and their respective prospects.

The following are the 10 compatibility factors between the Horoscopes of a Girl and the Boy, which is called Dasama Poruthams.  Though the Poruthams are described as Dasama Porutham (meaning 10 matching factors), actually there are 11 Poruthams that are considered for Horoscopes matching process.

1.    Nakshatra Porutham
2.    Raasi Porutham
3.    Gana Porutham
4.    Yoni Porutham
5.    Rajju Porutham
6.    Raasi Athipathi Porutham
7.    Mahendira Porutham
8.    Sthree Deerkka Porutham
9.    Vasiya Porutham
10.  Vedai Porutham

and the 11th Porutham is Naadi Porutham.

But, if the first 5 Poruthams are compatible, even if the other 6 Poruthams are not compatible, it can be well concluded that the horoscopes are matching – of course subject to other conditions being satisfactory.

While the Dasama Poruthams between the two horoscopes are explored, it is advisable that a general analysis is made in both the horoscopes.

First we have to rule out if there are any Doshams in both horoscopes.

If there is some Dosham in one horoscope, it should be ensured that similar – not necessarily exactly the same – Dosham prevails in the other horoscope also. If the Maangalya Sthanam in the Girl’s horoscope is impaired, it should be ensured that the Ayul Baavam in the Boy’s horoscope is enough strong.

If there is Sevvai Dosham in one horoscope, it should be ensured that the other horoscope is also having Sevvai Dosham.

Emotional bondage (Mana Porutham – in Tamil language) is the basis of a marriage.  This emotional bondage is established after the marriage in an arranged marriage.

In a love affair, this emotional bondage is first established and marriage takes place later.

Whether or not a Sevvai Dosham is capable of affecting the life of the couple, the psychological fear itself, if learnt later, will have its impact and make life miserable, since almost everybody is scared of Sevvai Dosham, whether or not we are aware its implications.

The process of horoscopes matching can be applied to arranged marriages.  It will be meaningless to apply the principles of horoscopes matching after a Girl and a Boy are involved in a love affair.

Of all the above 11 Poruthams, the first 5 Poruthams are considered important and the Poruthams from 6 to 11 are not considered to be significant in deciding a horoscopes matching.

Of course, some of the other 6 Poruthams are considered as standby or in other words  they are considered as satisfying the absence of the first 5 Poruthams.

The above considerations can be applied only if all or most of the other conditions are satisfied between both the Horoscope under consideration for matching.

The Nakshatra Porutham is considered as the basic fact in any horoscopes matching.  Even this can be compromised if the other matching parameters are overwhelmingly satisfactory.

When a love affair is involved, my advice is – DO NOT LOOK INTO THE HOROSCOPE IN LOVE MARRIAGES.  IT WILL ONLY END UP IN CONFUSION AND LOSS OF PEACE OF MIND.

In the normal course, horoscopes matching is a scale with which we measure the characteristics and prospects of the two horoscopes who are strangers or less known to each other.”

Retrogrades in 2014

Saturn is the Lord of Karma. Retrograde motion is a time when karma is sorted out. Therefore Saturn retrograde 2014 is a double dose of karma. Before we get into this, we need to understand what this word means. Karma is a form of energy that is very real. Like Saturn, it is very closely bound to time. Past, present, and future blur into one. If we have been bad in the past, then at a certain predestined time, an event will occur to teach us a lesson. If we been good in the past, then at a predestined time, an event will occur to reward us for our good deeds.

With Saturn in retrograde motion, the karma will relate to how responsible we have been in the past. The implications will affect our sense of security. This could be in any area of life and that will depend on two things. First, we have to look at the chart for the moment Saturn stations retrograde. Secondly, how it affects you will depend on how Saturn aspects your horoscope which I will also explain.

Saturn Retrograde 2014 Meaning

Saturn Retrograde starts on the 3rd of March 2014 at 23 degrees Scorpio, and stations direct on the 20th of July 2014 at 16 degrees Scorpio. So the retrograde cycle lasts for 150 days, spanning 7 degrees of the zodiac. In the chart for Saturn retrograde below, you will see the major aspect to Saturn is the opposition from Sedna. The planet Sedna is associated with extreme weather events, sea level rises and the other effects of climate change.

I pose the question in my post on planet Sedna, is the climate change we are witnessing “caused by human activity such as the burning of fossil fuels? Or is it simply the effect of the planet Sedna coming close to earth?” The answer is probably a bit of both, but for this Saturn retrograde cycle, it means that the double dose of karma is related to how well have been looking after planet Earth. Have we been accruing bad karma for future generation to deal with? Is the retrograde motion bringing back ancient memories or previous traumatic climate events? Saturn does rule history, and fear for that matter.

Perhaps this fear is something that subconsciously drives environmentalists to pursue their cause. Whether our activities are adding to climate change or not, acceptance of the facts, and being proactive in addressing the problems accrues positive karma. Climate change deniers and reckless industrialists will surely be racking up some negative karma. This Saturn retrograde cycle may settle some scores, rewarding hippies and punishing polluters.

Saturn Retrograde 2014 Astrology

Saturn stations retrograde on the fixed star Agena. This star is in constellation Centaurus, representing the Centaur Chiron. So this retrograde period can show wounds which do not heal, our own guilt at what we have dome to the planet, and the legacy we are leaving the kids. The damage done to the innocent plants and animals on the planet. The current rate of extinction is greater than at any other time in history.

Chiron was an astrologer who looked to the stars to see the future. His pain was so deep that he sacrificed his immortality so he could have a nice little rest up in the stars. There is no escape for us mortals, we have to live on this weeping planet, and witness the extinctions.

In another link between climate change and Saturn retrograde 2014, the Sun and the rising star in the discovery chart of Sedna are on the fixed star Agena. This is the astrological meaning of Saturn with Agena given by Robson: “Thoughtful, shrewd, association with medical men, healing powers, abrupt manner, occultism, domestic disharmony through jealousy.”

Chiron, or Centaurus, is the medicine man, the healer and occultist. He is the link between this Saturn retrograde and the climate change of Sedna. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but there is something in all this about seeing the future using mundane astrology. Using this skill to predict where we are going and how to adapt, to heal ourselves and the planet. This is a responsibility of astrologers in the world during Saturn retrograde 2014.

One more indicator or the environmental theme is the minor planet Ceres conjunct the North Node. Ceres rules the environment and crops, in fact she is named after “cereal”. Ceres, as ruler of constellation Virgo, is the ear of wheat in the Virgins hand. She is the fixed Star Spica, the Wheat-bearing Maiden, “spicifera Virgo Cereris“.  The lunar eclipse in this Saturn retrograde cycle, on 15 April 2014, is on the fixed star Spica. Ceres in the Saturn retrograde chart is on another star in constellation Centaurus called Muhilfain, from the Arabic محلفين, meaning “Jury”.

Away from mundane astrology now, and relationships come in for some drama with Venus square Mars. You can see in the chart that Mars is stationary retrograde, making the buildup of anger, resentment and jealousy in love relationships that much harder to express. There is danger of things getting out of control, leading to outbursts and temper tantrums. Jupiter square Uranus makes it even harder to keep a lid on the urge to lash out. The ever present Uranus square Pluto tops off this explosive mix,. The most sinister of the 7 Uranus Pluto squares falls within this Saturn retrograde cycle, on 21 April 2014.

Sun conjunct Chiron signifies the healing crisis with both love relationships and the environmental issues. Chiron and the Sun sextile Pluto is generally a positive aspect, the only positive aspect in the whole chart. For this reason, it could in fact deepen and intensify the numerous crises that Saturn retrograde 2014 seems to have in store.

Saturn Retrograde 2014 in the Signs

SCORPIO: Saturn conjunct your Sun means this a culmination of many years of effort. The harder you have worked and the more responsibly you have carried out your duties, then the more rewarding this Saturn retrograde will be. Even though you can achieve success and a good sense of sanctification, it will still involve hard grind, patience, and determination. Things don’t come easy, but the gains are well deserved. There may be delays, restrictions, or extra responsibilities to take on.

TAURUS: Transiting Saturn opposite Sun means this could be a testing time for you. You have to make more effort just to hold your ground, but at the same time, you could lack the necessary energy and motivation. It is important not to get too down on yourself. It is up to you to stand tall and soldier on because you may not get a lot of support from others. You may even feel like the world is against you. People or circumstance may put up barriers to your progress. If this does occur, then this Saturn retrograde requires you to use common sense and to consider a change of direction or retreat.

LEO and AQUARIUS: The challenging Saturn square Sun transit represents a crossroads in life for you. You could well feel very pressured during this Saturn retrograde period, as a brick wall comes up in front of you, forcing you to think seriously about changing your goals. This is most likely to happen if you have been straying off your destined path. Even If you are on the right path, then it can still be a struggle to battle on. Events and people will test your character and you may feel alone and discouraged. Patience and persistence is required to overcome any adversity. If it all gets too much, then it could be a signal that it is time to cut your losses and start over.

VIRGO and CAPRICORN: Saturn sextile Sun transit means that things are changing for the better. You may have been struggling to find stability and security in your life for a while now, and putting in a good deal of effort for little return. Now, the hard work is showing signs of paying off. You are going to have to get used to this new dynamic and make a few adjustments to make the most of it. This means pushing even harder and taking on more responsibility. Work on strengthening the foundations more than reaping the rewards. This relationship, career, house, or other project is going to be a long term prospect and will be successful and satisfying.

CANCER and PISCES: Transiting Saturn trine Sun means you have good karma coming your way. Saturn Retrograde 2014 should be a stable and successful phases of life with low stress, big achievements, and ego-boosting recognition. You can feel confident that you now deserve the best, because you have earned it. People you have helped in the past, even in other lives, will now come forward to help you out. You can make the most of this good Saturn retrograde karma by continuing to work hard with determination and a strong sense of duty and respect.

ARIES, GEMINI, LIBRA and SAGITTARIUS: You scored yourself a get out of jail free card with no major aspects from this Saturn retrograde. Better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick.

Saturn just went stationary retrograde at 24 Scorpio. This will be a main lesson for the next 7 months. What does this mean?

At this time in history, Saturn goes stationary retrograde (SRX) in early March, and will go direct(SD) in July at 17 Scorpio. You will recall that in the past two years, Saturn did its review and reflection from February through June, and then re-traced the span until it moved into unknown zones in the Autumn of each year.

Each year Saturn goes retrograde 12 degrees farther along than its previous year, and goes direct 12 degrees further as well. In 2011, SRX at 18 Libra, SD at 11 Libra. In 2012, SRX at 30 Libra, SD at 23 Libra. In 2013, SRX at 12 Scorpio, SD at 5 Scorpio. In 2014, SRX at 24 Scorpio, SD at 17 Scorpio.

This year Saturn will be retrograde until July. So from now till then, we get to review lessons we were first exposed to between late November 2013 through now. Scorpio deals with magnetism, loss, intensification of interaction, and feelings of connectedness or an inability to feel closeness. It is the sign where we go beyond forms into essence, beyond appearances into the very magnetism that attracts or repels that which is similar or dissimilar to whatever is the source of attraction.

So Saturn’s stationary degree indicated we would be learning about “facing the consequences” in 2011, and as I recall, I did and everyone I know did. Some consequences were good, some bad, and some clearly indicated it was time to leave “the doomed ship.” In 2012, it was about coming to some sort of “philosophical completion,” which was also the case for me and everyone I know.

In 2013, Saturn’s stationary degree indicated that we would be learning about a higher level of social interaction, group consciousness, and/or meeting people at a more “diplomatic” or “ambassadorial” level of relationship. This was about being our best self in all interactions, rather than casual or with an “everyday” type of attitude. It may be useful to see how you’ve “stepped up” over the past year, and now relate to others with a dignity or respect you cultivated last year.

Now it’s at 24 Scorpio, showing us the theme of 2014. This is the threshold of a review of Saturn’s track over the past three months.

The symbol for 24 Scorpio is “Crowds coming down the mountain to listen to one man.” Rudhyar says this degree is one of “the power in well-formulated ideas to become actual facts,” “practical inspiration; or else inability to face a vital challenge.”

In the Mandala he states this degree is one of “the need to incorporate inspiring experiences and teachings into everyday living.” He says this is about assimilating “peak experiences,” and allowing that to “transform our everyday consciousness and behavior.” He states the challenge of this symbol is to allow our Soul’s illumination to transfigure our lives.

I interpret this to mean that we will all have opportunities to use what we’ve heard, felt, or thought about to transform our lives and become those truths we’ve heard or experienced. For the next 7 months we’ve entered a time of radical transformation, where we become the inspiration for others’ transformations, and others become our teachers to help us transform our lives. And a sense of frustration is a clear signal to use the truths you’ve found to change your way of acting, feeling, or thinking.

Dr. Jones says this degree is about “recognition for intellectual attainment, and of the supremacy of spiritual over other more tangible forms of authority.” He states that “any higher realization must be brought to earth both for its initial confirmation and its ultimate sharing,” and “aspiration is meaningless until it achieves some practical focus” in familiar realms and events.

He offers the keyword of APPEAL. He states that when this degree works positively, it is “an Almost spectacular ability to enlist the higher potentialities of everyone for some practical need of the moment.” This degree involves faith, magnetism, deeper connectedness, social responsibility, universality, and sustaining ideals.

Obviously this will play out many ways, just as the consequences of 2011, the philosophical completions of 2012, and the refinement of our interactions of 2013 did. People born the middle of February, May, August, and November are profoundly impacted, as are everyone with planets anywhere near 20-28 Scorpio.

21-27 Scorpio are most affected now through early May, and will be again in September, October, and November. 15-21 Scorpio will be most impacted from May through September. And of course, all planets in Scorpio have been restructured or limited by Saturn’s influence since late 2012, and will be through the end of 2014. After that, Saturn enters Sagittarius and begins a new era! I’ll be publishing some articles about Saturn’s aspects to planets in the near future.

So from now through Summer, enjoy taking a new look at lessons begun between November 2013 and now. These are the major themes of this year, and we’ll be looking through the retrograde lens through July, and then applying our wisdom and understanding through September. That that you know how to conduct yourself at a higher, more refined level of interacting, allow your spiritual truths to transform your everyday life. You have nothing to lose but your fear and rigidity.
